Developing a City Wide Train-the-Trainers Program in NYC

The Center for Family Life in Sunset Park (CFL) approached TESA for assistance in developing the curriculum, assignments, and handbooks for their initiative to develop new cooperative incubators across New York City (a “train-the-trainers” program). After hiring us for several previous projects, CFL reached out to TESA again in order to revamp their existing train-the-trainers curriculum and make it more interactive and participatory.

How TESA helped

Over the course of 5 months, TESA worked closely with SCO Family of Services’ Center for Family Life to revamp their entire program that helped train non-profit organizations in the art of cooperative incubation. Additionally, TESA built an interactive handbook to be used by these non-profit organizations throughout the course of the training.

The curriculum topics ranged from consensus building to cooperative history to the role of a co-op developer, and all of the sessions were interactive, engaging, and based on dialogue. TESA collaborated with CFL to create a content rich curriculum that would provide non-profits with a plethora of co-op relevant knowledge, and just as importantly, hands on skills that would be used to help organize, structure, develop, and guide new worker cooperatives in New York. As mentioned, TESA also developed a corresponding handbook, which served to connect the attendee’s work in the sessions with their work directly in their organizations. Together, CFL and TESA built a robust, comprehensive, and highly interactive program that combined the pedagogy of participatory education with co-op development content. This curriculum should serve to be a foundation for the development of many New York based co-ops for years to come.

What would you say to others about TESA?

The Center for Family Life hired TESA to update and improve our curriculum for the work we do training community based organizations on developing worker coops. From the moment we began our work together my questions were answered quickly and in such a friendly manner. The whole process was super structured and organized. One of the best parts of working with TESA was their enthusiasm for the work and mission of the project itself. Even though there was a lot of work that went into editing the curriculum and time devoted weekly, the TESA team was flexible and diligent about making progress. Another aspect of TESA’s work is the high quality that they provide. The team is creative, intelligent and well-rounded. They work hard to meet your needs and are honest about their thoughts regarding the direction of the project. It has been a pleasure to work with TESA and that is why we decided to hire them for another component of our project. Thank you!

A note from TESA

CFL has been developing co-ops for almost a decade, and they have acted as a leader in the cooperative movement. It was an honor to work with them, especially on a robust program that will only serve to expand the amazing and inspirational work that CFL has been doing in New York. TESA is thrilled to have been able to help CFL spread their worker co-op incubation expertise to even more organizations across the city.
